十八路人马进兵洛阳，董卓派勇将华雄迎战。袁术怕孙坚夺了头功，便故意不发粮草，致使孙坚大败。华雄又连斩鲍忠、祖茂、俞涉、潘凤几员武将，各路诸侯震惊。关羽自告奋勇出战，因地位低下，遭到袁绍、袁术轻视。曹操赞赏关羽的勇气，命斟热酒一杯为关羽壮胆。关羽说：“酒且放下，我去去便来。”他出帐提刀，飞身上马而去。只听帐外鼓声大振，喊声大起，各路诸侯正惊疑不定，关羽已提着华雄的人头回帐，而那杯酒尚存余温。

华雄被斩，董卓便杀了袁绍的叔父太傅袁隗，起二十万大军，兵分两路：一路由李傕、郭汜把守汜水关；他自己则率领李儒、吕布等带十五万主力屯虎牢关。
